A REQUEST DECLINED.
MERRY-GO-ROtjND ON NAPIER beach. At last night’s meeting of the Napier Borough Council, a discussion took place on a request for permission to erect a merry-go-round on the beach fronting the Marine Parade. Cr. Spackman stated that the time was coming soon when the Council would have to decide whether it was going to make Nanier a health resort or n pleasure resort. The application was strongly by the Roads and Reserves Committee <°-i ry^nt sai ‘ l that tllß Cbnncil should facilitate tho entertainment of the public. He coula see no reason why a merry-gn-ronnd should nbt he erected nn th« beach. Cr. Smith said £hat one of the reasons for the committee’s recommendations was on account of the sick people in the hospital. It would not b© very nice for them to have a hnrAy-gurdv going all day The Mayor (Mr. J. B. Andrew) ex--> plained that the malter had been conT sidered very seriously. Consideration of the hospital patients was only bne reason. It -would also Interfere with tho work of tho Council’s own staff. If this request was granted tho next might be for a circus and there would be no end to it, Cr. Spackman asked if thev were going to give first consideration to those who come to Napier to seek better health or to those who com© for enjoyment. Ortainlv the town was a health resort, but thby must not make that the first and foremost consideration. The Council adopted the committee’s recommendation.
