— V.B.C. DERBY. “ EXERCISE GALLOP FOR SPEARFELT.’* (Received 3, 10.55 a.m.) Sydney, Nov. 3. Commenting on the result of the Victorian Derby, the 4 ‘Herald” says: “Numerically the field was up to the average, but it cannot bo said the classic event had attracted throe-year-olds with staying powers. It is doubtful if ever a Derby was won with greater case. It appeared nothing more than an exercise gallop to Spearfelt, whv made a magnificent run over the two last furlongs and came home on his own with his rider holding him well in hand. It was evident ho could nave won by several more lengths than he did.” Regarding Gloaming’s win, the “Herald” says that it was one of the easiest wins he has had for some time. The “Telegraph” observes: “Having his first race in his native State, Gloaming made tho opposition look cheap. ’ ’ AUCKLAND’S SECOND DAY, (Per Press Association.) Auckland, Nov. 3.
