Ypres day was. observed at the Cenotaph in London. In the presence of several thousands, Field Marshal Lord Plumer 4 accompanied by the military attaches of France and Belgium, laid a great wreath of lilies and cornflowers, which was handed to him on behalf of the Ypres League by Mrs. Thwaites, widow of an Australian officer, and. Sergeant Brooks, Victoria Cross. The P. and O. 15,000 ton steamers Cathay and Cambrin, for the Australian serivce. have been launched on the Clyde. ■ The wife of Harnett, who was the plaintiff in the famous asylum case, obtained a judicial separation on the ground of her husband’s desertion. The suit was undefended. The Japanese central meteorological observatory reports a terrific submarine volcanic explosion near Hatojima, one .ofi the Luchu group. The steamer Miyakomaru, sailing in the neighbourhood reports that the sea was muddy and boiling and pieces of pumice ewer floating on the surface. During the early hours of this morn♦ng the four-storied warehouse of the Edison-Swan Electric Company, of Clarence street, Sydney, was burnt out. The fire was not detected till it had extended almost through the building. The damage will amount to many thousands of pounds. The Bishop of Liverpool in the final consecration service announced that the new cathedral would bo open to al! men of goodwill. Special days would be set apart, on which nonconformist ministers might occupy the pulpit. The diocesan clergy would be invited to bring their own parishioners and to conduct services, linking up parochial with cathedral life.
