GIRL GUIDE MOVEMENT.
BRANCH FORMED IN HASTINGS. There was a large gathering of ladies at the Community Club rooms in response to the invitation of the Mayoress to discuss the formation of a Girl Guide Association, in Hastings and Havelock North. In the unavoidable absence of the Mayoress through illness Mrs J. H. Williams was voted to the chair. Miss Drennan. Principal lona College and Provincial Commissioner of the' New Zealand Girl Guides’ Association, stated the aims and objects of themovement. She exxplaihed that the organisation, th© motto of which was “Be Prepared.” was designed to cultivate in girls loyalty to God and the King, and helpfulness to others. They were so trained that thev were ready for any and every emergency. At the conclusion of Miss Drennan’s address and after, some discussion of various points raised, it was unanimously decided to form a combined Hastings-Havelock North branch of the Girl Guides’ Association, everyone in th© room agreeing to become an associate and to endeavour to enrol others. Miss Hodge. Havelock North, was unanimously elected president and the following ladies were appointed to the executive:—Th© Deaconess Mosdames Waugli, W. G. Stead Lovell Smith, and McNeil.. Misses Bullow. Wilkins, Ritchie. Lewis and Wood. Mrs W. G. Stead was appointed secretary protem. It was explained that girls must not be persuaded to become guides; they must join voluntarily. Any girls, there, fore, who wish to join may send in their names to Miss Hodge telephone 1279 D, or Mrs Stead, telephone 913, or to any members of the executive. A general meeting of girls interested will bo held in tho near future.
