CONFERENCE AT MELBOURNE. NOTHING ACCOMPLISHED. Melbourne, Oct. 31. When the compulsory conference called by the president of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court met to discuss the threatened waterfront trouble, the representatives of th© waterside unions stated that nothing had been decided upon by the unions, who were awaiting the results of meetings in other places before deciding upon action. No claims had been made on the employers, nor Could tfiey yet tell what claims would be urged. No conference could be held when it was impossible to inform the Court as to any dispute which was likely to occur. The president told the parties that so far as the Court knew of the claims they could be settled by constitutional means. He advised them not to attempt to enforce their demands by direct action. The proceedings then closed. THE VOLUMNIA HELD UP. (Received 1, 10,16 a.m.) Adelaide, Nov. 1. Summonses have been issued by the master of the vessel Volumnia upon the secretary, of the Fremantle beard of the Seamen’s Union and upon 23 members of the crew. WATERFRONT CONDITIONS AT BRISBANE. (Received 1.10 a.tii.) Brisbane, Novt 1. At the inquiry by the committee of investigation into the cause and extent of unemployment among wateraidors, a statement was submitted by the unemployment insurance Branch of the Labour Department, which shows that, from October last year to March there had been an average of 610 applications in a month for unemployed insufinee from watersiders. .
