PUBLIC WORKS ESTIMATES.
MATTERS OF HAWKE’S BAY INTEREST. (Special to “Tribune.’’) Welllington, Nov. 1. Several questions of local interest were asked by Mr. Gilbert 'during the consideration of the Public Works Estimates. He wanted to know what the position was in regard to the new Hastings railway station, and whether it had been placed lower down on the list of urgent works. The Hon. J. G. Coates admitted that, that waS so but it was a question of urgency. He knew the station had been promised time and time again, and that its delay was the cause of disappointment, but the fact that there wag a vote on the estimates would make the matter something to look forward to. HYDRO-ELECTRICITY. Mr. McKay expressed the fear that the. “juice’’ from Mangahab would be pretty well absorbed before it got past Dannie virke, and he thought Waikaremoana should have been harnessed before this. Mr. Coates said that it made no difference to Napier and district where tfie power for that locality came from. Waikaremoana would be commenced next year, and it was no use providing a lot of power for which there was no sale.
