The Taxing Bill
. LIBERAL AJO NOT NEEDED. ONE VOTE TO THE GOOD. (Special to “Tribune.”) Wellington, Oct. 1. After the divisions on tne Annual Taxing Bid in tne House on Wednesday morning, Mr Holland twitted the Lioerals wiin having gone to the help of Reform, but for which the Government would have been defeated. The Reformers retorted they would still have had one vote to the good without the Liberals. Mr Massey, replying to the suggestion that the Government was do(ing nothing for the small man, said the loan from the Bank of New Zealand was intended for settlers and for the man who did not require more than £3,500. “There is a document on niy table from a small farmer,” said Mr Massey, “saying ‘we have no one to look to but you and the Government’ ”
A Labour member: They are easily pleased. Mr Wilford: You should see some of the letters I get. Mr Massey; There are always some disgruntled ones. TKused to get them when I was Leader of the Opposition and I knew their true value. 1 am quite ready to go onto the platform and discuss at anv time what I have done for the farmers. Mr Holland: Is that a challenge? We will take you up. Mr Massey: And as for those Liberals who went into the lobby with us. I welcome them and hope they will vote with us on many other occasions. A Labour member: Birds of a feather flock together. Mr Massey: Exactly! And if an invitation from me is of any use, I shall be quite willing to find seats for them over here permanently. Labour members: Hear, hear.
