The Wahabi Fanatics
Approaching Mecca
POPULATION DEFENCELESS. KING’S APPEAL TO BRITAIN. (By Cable—Press Association—Copyright.) (Received 2, 10.55 a.m.) oairo, Oct. 1. A meeting of Egyptian press representatives aecided to telegraph ibn Essad, bultan ot Nejd, whose Wahabr tribesmen are only a few miles from Mecca, begging him to show humanity to the civilian population. A Hedjaz traveller irom Mecca confirms the critical position in the city. Anarchy reigns and pilgrims are iieeing. Husseit mooilised the police in connection with the transfer of the Government to Jeddah and the population is defenceless against increasing robbery and violence. The Wahabis have made no further advance towards Mecca. It is reported that peace negotiations have been opened.—(Reuter). An overnight cable stated that King Hussein has appealed to Britain for assistance. He says six aeroplanes would scatter the attackers and save Mecca. Britain is unlikely to intervene so long as pilgrims are not molested.—(Sydney “Sun” cable).
