YESTERDAY’S SITTING. (Before Air. R. W. Dyer, S.AI.) UNDER-WEIGHT BREAD. Frederick B. Gardiner, of the Health Department, proceeded against Thomas Hugh Critchley, baker, of Ta radale (Mr. Mason), for selling under-w'eight bread. It was stated that a two pound loaf that was offered for sale was an ounce short weight. Nine loaves were weighed and they were nearly one pound short. The bread was over-baked. Mr. Mason said that new firew'ood was responsible for the over-baking and that defendant’s bread had been weighed on many previous occasions and had been the required weight. Air. Gardiner agreed that it had always been up to weight. In imposing a fine of £5 and 7/- costs His Honour said that he hoped it would be a warning to others. George Frater did not appear to answer to a charge of selling bread under weight. The inspector said that he had weighed defendant’s bread various times and found several loaves short weight, nine loaves being llsozs. short. Defendant was fined £5 and 7/costs. BREACH OF PROHIBITION ORDER John Patrick O’Shannessey was fined £1 and 7/- costs for procuring liquor, and w'as convicted and discharged for entering the Caledonian Hotel whilst prohibited. AFTER HOURS. Horace Baddiley pleaded guilty to being drunk and being found on the licensed premises of the Royal Hotel after hours, was fined £2 10/- in all, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. REMANDED. Alexander Murray on a charge of assault was again remanded until May oth. Mr. Dolan stated that difficulty was being experienced owing to the strike in getting a witness from Wellington. ’ THEFT. Three juveniles appeared on a charge of theft. After hearing the evidence, Hir Worship ordered one of the youths 12 months’ probation and nine strokes of the birch, the other two were remanded for six months.
