PLANT DISEASES.

ROOT CAUSE DISCOVERED.

London, March 12. Ilio “Daily Express” says Mr. Hepburn, a Scottish farmer, as the result of many years experiments carried out at Bradfield Hall. Essex, with the help of a number of scientists, claims to have discovered the root cause of the chief plant diseases, including smut in wheat and the chief diseases in vegetables. The secret lies in the fact that the rising sap, Nature’s elixir, is the sovereign remedy. Fungus and insect pests attain the upper hand only when its flow is checked. Mr. Hepburn lias worked out a scheme of ghallow sowing •and subsoil cultivation by special implements, ensuring a steady flow of sap at th© most critical dates, which were established by expert inquiry. Mr. Hepburn claims that the method increases yields by 20 to 100 per cent.— (A. and N.Z.)
