EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. Th© Hawke’s Bay Education Board met yesterday. Present; Messrs. G y F Roach (chairman). K. Soundy. G. McKay, ALP.. A. King. W. Cuthbertson. G. Wildish. W. Oates, G. Crawshaw, J. O. Thomson, and A. W. Hamilton. CORRESPONDENCE. Departmental correspondence was dealt with as follows:— Submitting a summary of proceedings of education conference on September 25 and 26.—Received. Expressing appreciation of a plan of new type of small school for country districts where there are only a few children, and asking permission to circulate it to others Boards.—The permission was granted. Members considered it was a tribute to the Board’s architect (Air. Boland). Approving of £6O grant for ‘the acquisition of school site of three acres at Tahoratai.—Accepted. Submitting suggested dates of terms and vacations for 1924, and asking all Boards to observe the dates suggested in order to secure uniformity throughout the Dominion. —To be complied with as far as possible. Approving proposal that an advance up to £lOOO be made from the Board’s rebuilding fund to the workshop account. Stating that the application for a grant for a new school at Alorere must be deferred at present.—Received. Submitting particulars of arrangements made for examination of entrants to the teaching profession. The initial examination of pupil and probationers is t° be much stricter, and reexamination is not to be insisted on before entering the Training College except in exceptional cases. All candidates for teachers’ certificates are to be examined by school medical officers. The Board was asked to agree -to the examination of all uncertificated teachers before being appointed. It was decided to agree with the Department’s suggestions. Submitting letter which the Board is asked to distribute to all household schools with less than four children in attendance requesting the residents to adopt the correspondence system of instruction. Approving the establishment oi a school at Ohurahura. PUKETAPU SCHOOL. The Puketapu School Committee wrote complaining, that it had not been advised as to whether the Board intended to purchase the new site. In connection with thia matter, adI vice was received from -the Department tlkat it was under consideration, but that it was unlikely that funds would bo available this financial rear. 1 “The Puketapu people are scandal- ' ously treated by the Department,” said’Mr. McKay. “This reply is only 1 adding insult to injury. I would move ’ that fresh representations be made to ’ the Department asking theni to nur- • chase a site for a new school.” The motion was carried. i SCHOOL COMMITTEE CORRESPONDENCE. I Opoutama: Painting residence, out. buildings, and gates, and various alterations affirmed. : Nelson Park : Installation of permanent storm water drains approved. ’ Hastings street: Grant of £ for £ ■ up to £24 17/6 was recommended towards the cost of retarring the play- • ground. Otanlauri: Application to be made to Department for improvements to school buildings. Port Ahuriri: Committee is to be advised that the matter of leasing a new j * s still being considered.
