The British Government has approved a subsidy of one pound per acre for arable land where a minimum of thirty shillings is paid to labourers. The Parliamentary Agricultural Committee ha s approved the proposal.

The Fiji Legislative Council elections resulted:—Eastern Division: Sir Hayward Hedstrom; Western, Mr. Percy Faddy; Southern, Mr. Alport Barker; Vavua Levu, Mr. Hallam Roberts.

Tlie Full Court, has commenced the hearing in Sydney of the appeal of the Scott Fell Company against the verdict in the claim of the Limerick Steamship Company. ,

It is unofficially stated that the New South Wales Government intends floating a £12,000,000 loan in London. The terms are not stated.

The Sydney police stated that they had discovered extensive betting frauds when Morris Jacobs, Alfred Joyce, Charles von Geyer, and Edward Gardiner were remanded on charges of forging and uttering betting tickets. The police stated that the amount involved would run into many thousands-

Giving evidence at the inquiry in Sydney into pony racing, Frederick Hodges, formerly president of the ?ony Owners’ and Trainers’ Association, said he knew of a case where a pony entered in a race at Victoria Park was backed by the stewards. He said that it lost, and that the trainer was disqualified for twelve months on the following race day.

An estimate of the ordinary Budget of Japan for 1924, is 1270 million yen, being a reduction of 104 million on the current year’s figures. It has been further agreed to cut 107 million in expenditure for the rest of the current year.

Dr. Earle Page, commenting on the approaching termination of the five years’ hookworm campaign in Australia. said the Commonwealth, with the assistance of the States, proposed continuing the campaign for a further three years.
