THE PICTURE HOUSES.

THE KING’S.

A large and well satisfied audience witnessed the change of programme at the King’s last night. The Realart feature released by Paramount, “The Playing of Broadway” with beautiful Justine Johnstone in the Stella, role is a story which shows how a beautiful girl who is a member of the Thirty Club accepts the challenge of another member to force her charms on a well-season-ed batchelor who as a surgeon finds charity work in the slums of New York much more interesting than treating tho nerves of the fashionable 400, but like all well laid plans they oft_ go astray and this story is no exception. There are some elaboritc scenes and thrilling moments. The second feature “Outlawed,” is a very good Western, storywith plenty of thrills and cxcitlng moments. There is only one very pretty girl among some dare devil actors. There is a very pretty love story running throughout the picture. A very nice scenic topical budget and a real good comedy make ft first-class programme. MUNICIPAL. ’ Suspense keeps the audience gasping in the big dramatic scenes of Katherine MacDonald's latest film, “The Woman’s Side.’’ One tense moment conies when Alary Gray, portrayed by Katherine, bursts into the office of the candidate who is running in opposition to her father and threatens to commit suicide, unless he prevents publication of a story. Judge Gray himself appears on the’scene, and during this dramatic situation a shot is fired through the window, and Mary falls to the floor wounded. Of course, the stor.v is never printed and there is a . happy climax to the affair, but this i incident permits Miss AlacDonald to | contribute some of the finest dramatic, acting she has yet given the screen. The supporting pictures are oi a good variety and include a Sennett comedy, a Mermaid comedy, a scenic and topical gazettes. The orchestra, also supplies tuneful selections. COSY DE LUXE. A Fox melodrama and a Welsh Pearson drama are two very fine productions on the current programme at the Cosy, and with the addition of topical gazettes and the. orchestral selections, a most enjoyable and entertaining couple of hours is provided. The title of the Welsh Pearson contribution is “Squibs Wins the Calcutta Sweep,’’ in which Bettv Balfour, the English comedienne, is starred. She again plays the part of the flower girl “Squibs, which she created so successfully a little while ago. and now she has to 'represent her as the winner of the Calcutta Sweep, which she does with great credit to herself and the amusement of the audience. “Flames of Passion.” from the Fox studios, is replete with melodramatic thrills of the kind so dear to the heart of the really enthusiastic theatre-goer. An all-star cast is headed by George Larkin and Ruth Stonehouse.
