HAWKE'S BAY SCHOOLS.
CASE OF NAPIER SOUTH. DEPARTMENT CAUSES DELAY. “The knowledge that a grant is now available for the Hastings Technical High School is gratifying, as the accommodation at present is far from satisfactory,” reported the chairman (Mr. G. F. Roach) at today’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. “There are still several other urgent cases where no satisfactory reply has been received. In the case of Napier South, which is first on the Board’s list of urgent works, the plans had been received, but the Department has now suggested an entirely different type of school. 1 do not consider the latest plan suitable, and it is to b© Regretted that at this stage the Department has further delayed this case. It is going to be a most difficult matter to find accommodation for th© children in Napier next year. The Minister recognised the need for a new school several months ago. but we seem to be still far from finality “There is nothing of a satisfactory nature to report regarding Hastings West, Dannevirke North, Waitangata, Mangaorapa and other cases of urgency. The secretary has endeavoured by letter and telegram to obtain some statement of the Department’s intentions, but beyond a reply that “the Department will do its best to meet th© Board’s proposals,” it has made no further statement. This, you will agree, is most unsatisfactory, especially in view of the fact that if grants, are not received immediately two of the most important proposals—remodelling at Hastings West and Dannevirke North— must stand over for twelve months, as these works can only be carried out during the Christmas vacation.”
