‘ECONOMIES POSSIBLE.”
ERECTION OF SCHOOLS
DEPARTMENT’S INSTRUCTIONS
In a letter to the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, the Education Department, after outlining the Minister’s recently published opinion that economies were possible, advises that the following general decisions have been reached:—
(1) The direct labour system is th© cheaper and more efficient. As far as ♦ possible all new works should be carried out by direct labour. •
(2) Except in brick areas, schools are to be erected in wood, and even in brick areas the consent of the local authority is to be obtained if possible to buildings being erected in wood. (3) Enclosed corridors are not to lie erected, and open verandahs, 6ft, wide, with asphalt floors, are to be substituted, except that enclosed corridors 6ft. wide are to be provided in. schools of one, two and three rooms.
(4) The above decisions are to apply to all buildings for which grants hare been approved and where the construction is not advanced too far to enable the alterations in the plans to be made.
