HASTINGS HOUSE NUMBERING
(To the Editor.) Sir, —As occupier of a house I have just received a notice, ordering me to change the number which was placed there some years ago by authority of the Borough Council. The owners may of course please themselves but I have satisfied myself about the legal position, which is to the effect that the cost of the alteration must be borne by the Hastings Borough Council. The present system of one hundred to the block was instituted by CT. Clapham, who was given authority by the Council, and it was explained at a meeting of postal officials who expressed their satisfaction with it. Now, without the authority of the Borough Council, the whole of the system east and west has been disorganised by changing the dividing line. The system is further disorganised by houses on street corners being changed from east to north with a totally different number. It was never the intention of this or preceding Councils to alter the system—all that was necessary to do was to fill in the unnumliered gaps and make a few small adjustments.—l. am. etc., HOUSEHOLDER.
