A site for a roadman’s cottage ut Tamumu was left to Crs Butler and Nairn. The schedule of proposed main highways was received from the Highways Board with a request that the count. y should take a tally of the vehicular traffic for seven days on tho roads within the county. The chairman and engii. eer were authorised to make the arrangements for a tally. REPAIRING THE SLIPS. lAIPROVEAIENT IN ROADS. -

The engineer reported that with tho recent fine weather Hie roads had shown an improvement in a marked degree. The slip the Clareinch load was now passable for all kinds of traffic. The road had been re-formed and shingle carted for metalling. The slip on tiie Vouierererc Hill had been temporarily boarded and was open for heavy traffic. When convenient the road would be reformed and metalled. A start would be made this week with carting metal for the Tamumu and Pourerere .ridings. There was a fine bed of shingle at the Tamumu bridge. The. Overseer, reporting on the roads in the Porangahau riding, stated that metalling on the Horbertvillo-Cape road had been completed, including the slip, and other slips had been cleared up. A new temporary cutting had been made above the slip on the Wangaehu road. Aletal carting was in progress in various parts. Work was necessary on tho Wallingford Bush road.

BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

OLD STRUCTURES RENEWED.

In regard to the Patangata bridge, the engineer reported that with fine weather for another week or two it would bo possible to start on the two re- j maining mid-stream foundations. Once ( these were down and the piers erected 1 lie did not anticipate any trouble in completing the bridge this summer. Tho Overseer reported that a temporary span had been put on the north bridge on the Herbcrtville road ' and with under-struts and new longitudinal decking the bridge should be safe for •some time. Sharp’s bridge had been under-strutted. He estimated that for five bridges on the Porangahau-Wimble don road the timber required would be 22,975 feet of hardwood and 6960 feet of totara. With this work done all the bridges on this road would be renewed, excepting the Mangamaire bridge. Ho suggested deviating the road at Siteman’s bridge and re-build-ing the structure. The Alangoarapa bridge was fairly well advanced and would be completed in about three weeks providing the necessary timber came to hand. The approaches and road formation would be commenced this week. LOAN MONEY. The Public Trust Office approved an application for a loan of £10,900 on ac- ' count of the bridge construction loan, at 6 per cent for a period of 35 years, but intimated that the whole amount should be lifted in one sum. Councillors preferred to accept half now and the balance about March, and it was decided to accept the money and suggest that the Council leave half to be lifted later on. The Public Trust Office also agreed to consider an application for a loan of £4500 -for the Hawea road, but as a poll of the ratepayers has yet to be taken tho Council thought it premature to decide anything at present.
