' ( LACK OF PUBLIC INTEREST. • Wellington, Nov. J 3. i The New Zealand Olympic Council 1 is much concerned regarding the lack of * interest in the movement to provide < funds for sending a team to the Olym- 1 pic and Empire games. The chairman, ■ Air A. T. Davies, states that the response to requests for assistance has been poor. Although fifty letters were i sent to various parts of tho Dominion 1 only a few replies had been received 1 from persons willing to assist. It m ] terribly discouraging to find such little 1 interest being taken outside Wellington, says Air Davies. It is necessary to raise £lO,OOO in guarantees before the art union scheme can be launched, but only £350 has been received, mostly from Wellington. The Olympic Conn- < cil would be fully justified is not pro - ceeding with the project of sending a . team, but it does not intend to take ] that step at the present juncture. An- < other appeal is being made which is ; hoped will have the desired effect. . A DUNEDIN SUGGESTION. Du n edin, Nov. 13. A meeting of representatives of various sports held to-night ' to consider a proposal from the New ' Zealand Olympic Games Association for raising funds to send a New Zealand team to the Empire and Olympic Games. It was the opinion of the meeting that the time was not yet ripe to send New Zealand representatives to Olympic Games, and it was finally decided: “That this meeting considers no representatives*’ should be sent un- , less he or she was recognised as a ' champion in his or her particular line, '• and that the Olympic Games Association be asked whom they considered worth sending.” A committee was appointed to confer with the Mayor and sporting bodies should it be considered advisable in view of the reply from the association.

An unpleasant surprise awaits at least one immigrant due to arrive shortly and the happening is absolutely inexplicable (says a Nelson correspondent). The City Council’s London agents some time ago wrote recommending a man for the position of gas engineer. The Town Clerk replied that there was no such position vacant. Later the firm wrote again, forwarding photograph and various particulars, and again Hie Council advised that they were not thinking of making an appointment. Now, however, ihe Immigration Department has written the Council asking what arrangements have been made for the reception of the man who, accompanied by his wife and family, is due in New Zealand shortly, and has been nominated by this same London firm for the City Council! How the mistake can have occurred nt the other end is past understanding, us the City Council know absolutely nothing of the man, and have told the Immigration Department so. Future developments will be interesting. A WORD TO WOMEN.
