Rand Revolt

DEMAND FOR AN AMNESTY. RKTECTED BY UNION PARLIAMENT. !By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.] (Received 7. 11.35 a.m.) Capetown, March 6. In the Assembly the Nationalist motion urging the Government to grant an amnesty to all persons convicted or awaiting trial in connection with the Rand strike crimes was supported by General Hertzog and Mr. Creswell. The Premier, repudiating the charge of vindictiveness,, maintained that a complete amnesty at the moment was out of the question. The revolution, he said, was engineered by people not connected with the strike. Tlie loss of life was so appalling that the Government would be guilty of crime if it wiped everything off th© slate. It would be tantamount to madness to accept the motion. Mqrcv ves; but tempered with justice and devoid of lightheartedness in the face of the terrible deeds committed, which should be regarded in the light of possible future happenings. This time it had been the white population; next time it might be non-whites. Tlie Government would have to do its duty. Th© motion was negatived by 60 to 44, the voting being purely on party lines.—-(A. and N.Z.)
