RECLAMATION WORKS.

MR NELSON’S PROPOSALS. A special meeting of the Napier Harbour Boafrd' was held yesterday for the purpose of hearing Mr George Nelson’s views on the reclmation scheme, and to consider his appointment as engineer in charge of that branch of the Board’s work. Mr A. E. .Tull presided. Mr Nelson said that the cost of the work affecting the Board would be about £35,000. The scheme which he preferred was oho to deal with the Tutaekuri river by diverting it to the Waitangi, if, however, the river were not taken away entirely

Mr Nelson, in explaining his alter native proposals, said the first would cut off about 2,500 acres, practically all the Board’s area, and would cost about £35,000; the second would deal with 2820 acres, costing about £40,000; the third, ( of 3,500 acres, cost £53,000, and the fourth of nearly 10,000 acres, from Awatoto to Rcdcliffe, at a cost of £IJS,000. Taradale and Greenmeadows would be free from floods if the Tutaekuri wore diverted to the Waitangi. Mr Nelson further explained his view’s by means of plans, etc.

The Board then went into committee, and, upon resuming in open meeting, it was announced that the following motion had been carried:—“That, the members of the Board, were impressed with the proposals outlined by Mr Nelson, and that as they were desirous of putting into effect the full scheme, which involved more than the Harbour Board areas, they would approach the Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board with a view’ tu joint action, and, in the meantime the question of appointing Mr Nelson as engineer to carry out the scheme be deferred until the May meeting.”
