"SAMMY” WOODS.

NOT A BUSINESS SUCCESS. London. March 1. Mr. S. M J. Woods has resigned the secretaryship of the Somerset County Cricket Club. He said at the I annual meeting yesterday: “When 11 was appointed two years ago doubts | were expressed regarding my business ability. I feel that they are well: founded. The sooner you get a secretary with a more businesslike head than mine the better for the club.”

"Sammy” Woods was for a good many years one of the most picturesque figures in English cricket. An Australian by birth, he went to England as a lad, and played for Cambridge University and Somerset. For years he was one of the mainstays of that weak but sporting county eleven. A man of magnificent physique —he weighed somewhere about fifteen stone in trailing—he had a great heart for the game and punishing powers quite out of the ordinary. So- fierce was his hitting at times that he knocked the ball out or shape as well as breaking his bat. He was also a fast bowler.
