UNIVERSITY SENATE

THE HABENS PRIZE. Dimedin, Jan. 20. At the University Senate meeting it was announced that the examiners for th© Habens Prize had decided that the standard of last year’s essays did not justify an award. The subject this year is “Th© Washington Pact, as Affecting the British Pacific Communities.” The Special School Committee’s recommendation was adopted that until a recognised school is thoroughly equipped and staffed no Government funds be allocated to another special school in the same group of subjects in other centres, provided that before additional funds are granted for increasing the staff, equipment, and buildings in' a recognised' school due consideration be given to the question whether the educational requirements of the youth of New Zealand could not lie met more efficiently by the establishment of another special school or other university colleges.
