Sydney, Jan. 11. A Manly boy. Alan Charlton, who has not yet turned 16, has accomplished several wonderful swimming feats. On Monday afternoon, in the Rushcutters’ Bay. (Sydney) baths, Charlton swam 880 yards in llmin. 0 3-ssec. This is 23 3-ssec. faster than the -world’s record, held by Norman Ross, the American champion. Unfortunately, Charlton’s figures will not go dow'n on the record books, as he did not swim under official conditions. In 1905, Barney Keiran was credited with llmin. 11 3-ssec. for the half-mile, though his time was never officially recognised. Charlton’s swim was in the nature of a trial —he is to meet W. Harris, the champion of Hawaii over half a mile in the New South Wales Championship, to be decided on Saturday. He was carefully timed, and there is no reason to doubt that the record is not authentic. 1 Only a fortnight ago, in a competition race in the Manly Baths, Charlton swam 440yds. in smin. 16 3-ssec., which is the fastest time ever recorded by an Australian. The previous best was by. Keiran, who registered smin. 19sec. in Sydney in 1905.
