SECOND TEST MATCH. FINE SHOWING OF NEW ZEALAND Christchurch, Jan. 5. The second test, match was begun at Laueaster Park this afternoon in glorious weather, with a large attendance. Maclaren, Hillwood and Tyldeslcy were omitted from the English team, which was captained by Hartley. New Zealand won the toss and stayed at the wickets all afternoon, giving an excellent exhibition of batting. Nearly all the batsmen made; good, and with a. fast wicket-and out held, fairly rapid scoring, and crisp, clean 'fielding the cricket was good to watch. Collins and Blunt opened for New Zealand, and the score stood at Id 7 when a separation was effected, Freeman taking a smart catch off Blunt, at. tliird man. Sneddon went with the score una.ltere.'t. jjunibert and Collins went for the bowling, hut eventually J’reeinan clean bowled Lambert. 172 —3 —33. Collins reached the century amid applau.-o, bu’t Brand came on and cuugnt and bowled himTirst ball. He batted .133 minutes and hit sixteen fours. .198— 4 — 102. AUCKLAND v. OTAGO. Dunedin, Jan. 5. The Plunkpt Shield match, Auckland* v. Otago, was commenced here today on an easy wicket. The -weather, though threatening in the morning, was satisfactory for the afternoon’s playAuckland*won the toss and elected to bat, their first innings realising 216 for 3 hours 29 minutes’ play. The only batsman to make a substantial score was Cummings, who compiled 90 after beipg dropped at 32. Otago’s fielding was keen and accurate and seven Auckland men were out to catches.
