Maclaren, Hillwood and Tyldeslcy were omitted from the English team, which was captained by Hartley. New Zealand won the toss and stayed at the wickets all afternoon, giving an excellent exhibition of batting. Nearly all the batsmen made; good, and with a. fast wicket-and out held, fairly rapid scoring, and crisp, clean 'fielding the cricket was good to watch.
