LABOUR MEMBERS.
PARLIAMENTARY’ SALARIES TOO I LOW. London, Dec. 7. Many of the new Labour members of the House of Commons are finding that they cannot make ends meet on £4OO per year, especially those from distant constituencies. One points out that the fares for a week-end visit home cost £4 and lodgI itigs, meals and travelling in London ! £4 10s, leaving him out of pocket without allowing anything for the mainten- j • a nee of his wife and family. < The “Evening Standard” points out that the Labour party consists of three I sections—the intelligencia, possessing] either private means or literary earn- i ing power; trade union officials, drawing an extra £250 a year; and the new-• est members, who left their positions and businesses to enter politics, the last are finding themselves hard hit. The latest suggestion is the establishment of a residential club in order to reduce poof members’ London expenses.— (A. and N.Z.)
