PASSPORTS AND PERMITS.

CHANGE IN SYSTEM. I.ETTERS OF IDENTITY FOR THE ISLANDS. PASSPORTS FOR CANADA. Particulars of changes that have just been made by Order-in-Council in con nection with the issue of permits to p< ople wishing to travel have been received hy the Officer of Permits and Passports at Auckland (Air Frank Evans). Under the new system, in lieu of permits being issued to those \?ho desire to travel to Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and Rarotonga, arrangements have been made to issue “certificates of identity.” With regard to Canada, a change has also been made, and instead vf a permit a passport is now necessary for

anyone travelling to that country. Applications tor letter of identity to travel to the places named must be made on a form of application for a passport instead of on a permit application form. In future applicants for passports wJI be required to fill in only the form of declaration for passport, but appli etinti tvh® were born in a country other than New Zealand must enter on the face of the form particulars showing the date of their arrival in New Zealand, the port of arrival and the name of the vessel by which the applicant arrived. Passpoits I will be validated for countries desired hy applicants, and they will be required to state clearly in their declarations full particulars of their proposed travel. British passports, unless Otherwise endorsed, are valid for travel within the British Empire, and so no endorisement of such passport by the local passport office is necessary.
