“THE THIRD DHGREE” AND . “SUNDAY.” It will be good news for tin- theatre 1 goers of Hastings to learn that Mr. I William F. Russell has made arrange ; incuts to present his famous dramatic organisation for a two-nights’ season I commencing on Monday, October 2nd. There will he a change of play nightly and the l pieces selected for presentation here' are “The Third Degree” and “Sunday.” Mr. Russell has already played seasons in Auckland, Welling ton and Christchurch with wonderful success. The company is headed by that charming young Australian actress Miss Nellie Brandey, and the press and public of New Zealand centres have* l>een loud in their praise of this young lady’s histrionic ability and charming personality. Recently in Auckland on the opening night after 1 the performance a remarkable scene I took place. The “Sporting and Dra- j matic News” comments thus: “At the | conclusion of the performance there was a remarkable scene of enthusiasm. Miss BramleV was ovated with remarkable heartiness and was presented with numerous beautiful bouquets and baskets of flowers. The other lady members of the company were also handed lots of lovely bouquets. Mr. Thomas E. Foster, the stage director, was enticed on the stage to share in the general acclamation, and then there was renewed applause, and when Mr. W. F. Russell took up his stand with the company there was a tempestuous demonstration of applause such as has never in the history of old first-night-ers taken place at Ths Majesty’s before. There were clamours for ‘speech’ from all parts of th? theatre, and Mr. Russell feelingly expressed hi.s thanks on behalf of the company for the splendid reception given them.”
