Yet another petition from John J. Meikle, now of Auckland, was reported on by the Public Petitions Committee of the House of Representatives yesterday. Petitioner asked for further compensation for wrongful imprisonment. and the Committee expressed the opinion that the Government should give the proposal favourable consideration. It suggested that the Government should consider granting to Meikle £4 per week for the remainder of his life. A Sydney correspondent writes that high-heeled shoes were blamed by Miss Julian Fisher (New Zealand) at the Health Association Conference in Sydney last week for many bodily ills. “It is not. however, an easy matter to persuade girls to this fact,’ 1 she said. “In Auckland we teach girls to walk and take photos of their feet to serve as illustrations.” “Girls do not like to look at photos of their feet,” Miss Fisher added as she held up some prints. “These are what they look like.” Several ladies present appeared self-conscious. “The weight of the body is not evenly distributed on the foot and results in deformity, which is most frequent and takes years to cure,” Miss Fisher said.
