“CARNIVAL.” “Carnival,” the great English picture now showing at the Hastings Municipal Theatre, proves what can be done in cinematography. It can be safely said that for sheer beauty of photography and excellence of production “Carnival” has never been excelled. and lovers of the beautiful will find it a least of delight. Tlfe scenes of the story are laid in, Venice, and all the characters have foreign names. Here amidst age-old waterways and canals, stately palaces and magnificent public buildings, is enacted a story of surpassing interest and charm, portrayed by English actors and actresses, with Mr. Matheson Lang in the leading role. The action never drags for an instant, from the time one sees the actur, Silvio Steno, at work studying his part in “Othello” ; then on through a succession of wonderful scenes, showing the revels of Venice during carnival time, to the closing scenes of the story with its happy ending. American producers have accustomed us to lavish spectacle, but they navr seldom equalled the scenes of the great masked ball In “Carnival,” with its crowds of revellers and ever-changing lights—a masterpiece of direction and production. The moonlit canals and waterways of the wonderful city to our doors. British people should feel a glow’ of patriotic pride that such a picture “Carnival” comes from a British studio —it proves that England can hold her own with all the world when she puts her heart into it.
