COST OF LIVING.
IS IT FALLING? DISCUSSION AT ARBITRATION COURT SITTING. REMARKS BY PRESIDENT. There was brief reference to the cost of living at Tuesday’s sitting of the Arbitration Court in the waterside workers’ dispute. Mr W. G. Smith, who appeared for the employers, remarked nt the opening that it appeared to him that the court had questioned his statement that there had been a drop in the cost of living since 1913. His Honour Mr Justice Frazer said that the food groups had shown a slight drop, but this had been counterbalanced by the other groups. In reply to a remark by Mr Smith that Dr. Mcllwraith had stated that, during 1913, prices in the Dominion fell 3.7 per cent., His Honour referred to the different position as disclosed by the Government Statistician. As far as he went, Dr. Mcllwraith was correct, but in other articles there had been a rise.
