HASTINGS MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Mr R. W. Dyer, S.M.-, dealt with the following cases at the court sittings this morning. Deferred Sentence.—Ariata Tipua, the young Maori woman on remand for sentence on two charges of theft of drapery at Hastings was brought up. It was explained at the last sittings that accused had been admitted to probation on a three years’ setence, which probation she had broken, and she was remanded pending advice from the prison authorities. This morning, Sergeant Hogan said that he had received u telegram saying that accused’s license of probation had been cancelled, and that she should have to he sent back to prison to serve the balance of her sentence, some eight months. His Worship settenced accused to three months’ imprisonment on both of the charges of theft, sentence to be concurrent with the balance of her original sentence. Excess Speed.—August Oparo, a native, was charged with (1) exceeding the speed limit whilst driving a motor car in the borough, and (2) failing to notify the change of owmership of the car. Sergeant Hogan said defendant was driving at the rate of 28 miles an hourr- The police had much trouble in tracing him owing to his failing to registter the change of ownership. Defendant was fined £2 and costs £1 0s 6d on the first count, and on the second £1 and costs 17s 6d. Frank O ’Connor similarly charged, and who also drove at 28 miles an hour, was fined £2 and costs 10s on the first charge and. £1 and costs 7s on the second. Lightless Motor Car.—Walter Horton lor leaving a motor car standing in n borough street after dark without lights was fined £1 and costs 7s. CIVIL CASES. Judgment was given for plaintiffs in the following undefended eases: Vidal and Sons v. J. E. Skeates £3 Bs. costs 26s 6d; Baird and Co. v. E. Mclver £9 15s 10d, costs £2 0s 6d; Dodds and Martin v. W. G. Byrne £J 15s 6d, costs 23s 6d ; same v. Charles Hamlin £2 15s, costs £1 10s 6d; Vidal and Sons. v. G. Greer £3 Bs, costs 31s 6d; Tribune Ltd. v. Pae Otene £3 ss. costs 36s 6d; R. Gregory v. Charles Sudfelt £3, costs 24s 6d. Judgment summonses : Tribune Ltd. v. Fred Oorby j £3 15s, to be paid in two_ months or ten days’ imprisonment. William Halt v. P H. Tomoana £36 17s 6d. to be paid at the rate of 10s weekly or one month’s imprisonment, costs £1 Ils ad.
