NAPIER BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WEEKLY MEETING. Th© Napier Borough Council held its weekly meeting in the Borough Council Chambers last evening, when there were present the Deputy Mayor (Cr. P. Ashcroft), prsiding. Councillors F. G. Smith, jun., J. Black, R. B. Clark, A. E. Renouf, J. C. Bryant, A.Hobson, W. Harvey and B. B. Creagh. Leave of absence was granted His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. B. Andrew). THE SMOKE NUISANCE.. The General Manager of the New Zealand Railways advised that instructions had been, given to increase the height of the smoke stack at the railway workshops and also that coal of a less smoky nature was to lie used in the furnaces.-—lt was decided to thank the General Manager and to forward a copy of the advice received to the residents who forwarded the petition. FIRE PLUGS. The secretary of the Napier hire Board again requested the council to see that the lire plugs were kept free of shingle and that the positions of the plugs were clearly marked on both sides of the road.—The overseer stated that the plugs were being kept clear as much as possible and the plates showing where the plugs were were distinguishable. Every month, he said, the plugs were attended to.—lt was decided to reply in the terms of the overseer’s statement. SUGGESTED. BY-LAWS. Recommendations were received from the sanitary inspector (Mr. Redman) suggesting new by-laws and alterations to the existing by-laws governing plumbing and drainage, poultry, boarding bouses and common lodging houses, milk supply ami butchers’ shops, which in hi* opinion would make a big improvement in the sanitation of the borough.—The recommendations were referred to the borough solicitors, who are at present framing a new set of by-laws, MUNICIPAL THEATRE SCENERY. Cr. Renouf drew the council’s attention to the state of the scenery at the Municipal Theatre. One piece, he said, was already beyond repair, whilst others were the worse for wear. If these latter were attended to immediately, he said, they would have scenery for a good number of years to come, but if not then shortly it would cost the counci’ a good sum for new scenery. —lt was decided to get a report and an estimate of what was required to be done.
GENERAL. The Finance Committee was instructed to go into the question of appointing a clerk of works during the construction of the Moeller Memorial Sand Pit. lhe council decided to receive a deputation on Monday night next from the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union consisting of Messrs. Callaghan, Piki and McKenzie with reference to improvements to McLean Park. A request of C. H. Cranby and Co. for permission to erect a ‘signboard on the Awatoto reserve was refused.
