SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

HAVELOCK NORTH. The monthly meeting of the District School Committee was held last evening. The Rev. R. Waugh occupied the chair. Also present: Messrs. J. H. Joll. A. E. Jell, W. J. Millar, H. Coombe, R. Henry, J. Honeybun and E. F. Leicester. The headmaster reported that the present roll is 308, and the attendance during the past month averaged 283. Mrs. A. Hawley, of Hastings, is at present relieving on the staff, pending the appointment of a permanent first assistant. So far no furniture had come to hand for the new room, not even a table or a chair, while they were using the old long desks which were replaced years ago by dual desks and the old desks had been used a* playground and shelter seats. He suggested a sub-committee be formed to discuss with him one or two matters in connection with the grounds.—Report received. The chairman and Mr. J. H. Joll were appointed the sub-committoe to confer with the headmaster re grounds. It was resolved to write and remind the Education Board of the need of new desks. The board forwarded the apglloAyn and testimonials from Mr. I. B. Macken, District High School, Te Kuiti, for the position of first assistant at the local school.—The committee decided to approve the appointment of this teacher. The appointed will be the visiting committee for the ensuing month. HASTINGS CENTRAL. Mr. A. D. Ross (chairman) presided at the meeeting of tlie Central Schfol Committee held last night. Also present: Messrs. C G. Cunnold, R. Henderson, H. Price. J-E-King ». Gj|g, A. W. Parkinsou, McPhail, H. EviMn and H. Young (secretary). ■ On the motion of the chairman, t resolution of sympathy was extend*! to Mr. A. C. Johnstone, formerly chairman of the committee, on the death of his wife, who had been ateo a memlier of the committee. Mr. W. Renton (acting-headmaster) reported the roll number a* 567, a slight increase, with an average attendance for the month of azo.o. There were various changes in the staff, owing to the temporary appointment of Mr. L. F. Pegler (headmaster) as inspector of schools. The secretary presented a balancesheet of the reoent school plain and fancy dress ball, showing a net profit of £75 14/1, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded al! who assisted. The secretary also presented a statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the Maddison memorial swimming baths, showing a small profit for the last season, which it was proposed to expend in thoroughly scraping and cleaning the baths and repairing the asphalt in preparation for the coming season. The chairman, on behalf of himself and the committee, expressed tion at the appointment of Mr. Henton as temporary headmaster, and congratulated Mr. Pegler on his being appointed relieving inspector. TARADALE SCHOOL. (Own Correspondent.) The usual montldy meeting of th* Taradale School Committee was held last evening. Present: Rev. A. HNorrie (chair), Messrs. D. Millar, JMcNeil, J. Phillips. A. RoWISHd, •. Montgomery. R. Wright, E Mulvanah. Tho beadmaster (Mr. J. Williamson) reported the roll to be 371. with an average of 350. If the present average of 285 at the main school could be maintained, an additional teacher would b© required at the beginning of next year. The results ol the school games competitions had oeen ( very good. In football A team had won tour, drawn one. and lost two out of soveu played; B team had won all • their matches. In basket ball. A team (first year) had won five, drawn one, aud lost two; C team hod won three, drawn one, and lost four. Splendid work had been the children in garden work. An unfortunate Circumstance had occurred in connection with Dominion Day. He was keeping rigidly to the original date, and tha board’s regulation in observing the 26tb September. Messrs. Norrie, Mulvanah, and Boland had visited the school that day. and matters re auHitiona, hiring of rooms, etc., were discussed. The headmaster’s action in connection with the holiday was endorsed. Very favourable comment was made on the success of the parents’ day. Xbo scholars' work in the garden was highly commended. It was decided to ask the board for any plans made out for remodelling the school. The Town Board were to be approached for the hire of the supper room as a classroom. . Aiwounts for £l3 were passed for Messrs. Phillips and | Wright were appointed visitors for tlie mouth.
