KANSAS BANDITS.

RAID A JAIL-HOUSE. FAILURE TO RELEASE CHIEF. New York, Sept. 25. A sensational gaol delivery, such as seems to have become typical throughout the middle west States, occurred last night at St. Paul, Minnesota, and the sequel was enacted to-day. Twelve bandits from Kansas City, bent upon releasing their chief, who was imprisoned in the county gaol in the heart of the city, got off a train in the suburb of Mineapolis, robbed a bank and escaped with 97,000 dollars. The bandits arrived at the gaol last night and gained admittance by posing as revenue officers desiring to lock up several prisoners for the night. Once inside they quickly overpowered the guards and sought the cell of their chief, but were unable to effect his release because they could not find the key of the cell. An attempt to break the lock also failed, but they did release several prisoners whom they recognised as friends and escaped. The police to-day captured six bandits and the released prisoners all biding in the city.—(A. and N.Z.)
