O’Brien, Health Officer for the Manawatu district for the past 18 years, has retired on superannuation as from the end of August. It is understood (states an exchange) that their Excellencies, Lord and Lady Jellicoe. have decided to take up their residence for a short period from January next at Takapau, Hawkers Bay. M. Dubois. French representative on the Reparations Commission, has resigned owing to ill-health. It is expected M. Jonnaert will succeed him. —(Press Association). The engagement is announced of Miss Jean M. A very old West Coast pioneer, Mr. William Wilson, of Camerons, died on Monday evening at his residence, at the advanced age of ninety years, after a brief illness. Among those present in Constantinople are two New Zealanders, Captain and Mrs Pharazyn (nee Miss Field, daugliter, of Mr. W. H. Feild. M.P.), and anxiety is. being felt on their behalf. The former is a captain of the Royal Field Artillery. Mr. Frederick Calvert, a Dunedin barrister, has died, aged sixty. He was one of the organisers of the Friendly Societies’ Dispensary. and was well known in Masorflc and Oddfellow circles. Mrs Lawson, widow of the Australian poet, is an inspector in the Statfi Children’s Relief Department. Their son James went through Hawkesbury College, and is now on the land. The •laughter, Bertha, recently took her B.A. degree at Sydney University. Mr C. Eugene Smith, who for the past ten years has represented the Government Insurance Department in various parts - of the Dominion, has been appointed new business manager for Wellington to the National Mutual Life Association. The marriage took place in Masterton last week of Mrs Emma Marley, of Chapel street, to the Rev. William Barnett, Baptist minister at Tauranga, who has been spending six weeks’ holiday in the Wairarapa, states the Wairarapa “Age.” It was announced on Sunday in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Wellington ,that the Wellington Presbytery had granted three months leave of absence to the Rev S. Robertson Orr, owing to illness, and had appointed the Rev Gibson Smith Acting-Moderator of St. Aundrew’s. The death occurred last week at Wanganui of Mr John Anderson, who for very many years carried on a housefurnishing business in the Avenue. He had reached his 77th year. Another old Wanganui resident, the widow of the late Mr Edward Purser, who has latterly been living-at Blenheim, died there, last week also. General Sir Andrew Russell, Dominion president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, will arrive in Christchurch on October 1. He will address meetings at Temuka and Timaru in connection with the association. On October 5 he will deliver an address in Christchurch under the auspices of tho Oantei*bury Efficiency League. Sir Andrew Heft Hasting* by the mail train this morning for Pio Pio, near Te Kuiti, where be unveils' a war memorial.
