Rev. D. O. Bates, Dominion Meteorologist, telegraphs as follows for 24 hours from 9 a.m. this day:—The indications are for variable and moderate breezes, but northerly moderate to strong winds prevailing. Expect changeable and showery weather. Barometer has a falling tendency. Mails for Gisborne, per Putuki, close to-morrow (Saturday), at 5.20 p.m. The Jewish year 5683 commences at sunset this evening. The Napier Labour Department sent out five men to work at the Crownthorpe soldier settlement to-day. The Paparoa has wirelessed that she will arrive in Wellington on the evening of the 27th. Several changes of officials are pending in the New Zealand railways, owing to the retirement on superannuation of senior officers, but so far as can be ascertained Hastings will not be effected. Some “hungry dog” strayed into the yard at the rear of Ellingham’s Hotel on Wednesday morning and finding the meat safe invitingly open made off with a string of tine sausages Intended for the guests’ breakfast. The adjourned inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of the Maori child, Ehau Tupaea Wakoare, who died in the Napier Hospital on September 5. was held yesterday afternoon before the District Coroner, Mr. R. W. Dyer, S.M. Evidence was given by the mother, who said she remembered the child, which was only two years old, having had ice cream and milk and later lemonade and meat pies. Dr. Eudey, of the Napier Hospital. said he was present at a post mortem examination conducted by Dr. Berry, which disclosed signs of tuberculosis in the lungs and pleurisy in the left side of the breast. The intestines were congested and inflamed. The immediate cause of death, he considered, was gastro enteritis, following a low’ state of health due to tuberculosis. The inflammation was probably caused by the class of food the child had eaten the evening before death. Test' made by the Government Analyst ot contents of the stomach for irritant poisons produced negative results. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence. Last night at the Napier Fire Station, members of the Fire Board entertained the brigadesmen to a social evening. Th© Port Brigade was also represented. Mr. J. P. Williamson (chairman of the board) presided, and the Mayor (Mr. J. B. Andrew) was also Jpresent. A varied programme was much enjoyed, including a snooker tournament, which was won by the brigadesmen on the aggregate by the narrow margin of 201 to 198. The individual scores (Board names given first) were:—Norrie 54 v. F. Gilberd 47; Thorne-George 40 v. Forsyth 43; Creagh 47 v. Minett 35; W. Hill 3b v. G. Plested 36; W. Hay 27 v. Ashworth 40; the brigadesmen thus winning three games out of five. A community sing led by Mr. S. P. Spiller and musical and other items, backed up by a delectable supepr, all added to the success of the function, which was greatly appreciated by the guests. It v\ae annfaurqed that the iboard would present a medal each to the Napier and Port Brigades for future competition amongst the memebrs.
