Miss Duke, dressmaker at Messrs. ; Roachs’. Ltd., Hastings, left this morning for Wellington on a business trip. The death took place at New Plymouth on Monday of Mrs Drew, widow of the late Rev. William Drew, in her eighty-third year. Born at Whitford 63 years ago, Mr. John L. Trust died at Morrinsville on Saturday. His father, the late Mr. Ambrose Trust, came to New Zealand from Devonshire 70 years ago. The marriage took place in Christchurch on Monday of Miss Ruby McKegg (late N.Z.A.N.S.) to Mr. James Luke, of the Repatriation Department, Wellington. Mr. H. S. Small, who formerly held the position of truant officer to the Auckland Education Board, has been re-appointed to that position, which is now officially desingated as /r school attendance officer.” Mr. B. Larsen has resigned the position of county clerk and treasurer tc Akitio County Council for two rea sons—the inadequacy of the salary and to accept an invitation to go on the land with his sons. A Press Association message from Dunedin reports the death of Mr. Job Wain, once captain of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, and proprietor of the well-known hotel known by his name. He was 86 years of age. Mr. Charles Hill died at his home in Papanui (Christchurch), at the age of 69 years. He joined the Post and Telegraph Department in Wellington in 1867, and for seventeen years he was assistant officer-in-charge at the Chief Post Office. Christchurch. Mr. E. C. Robieson, who has been the Napier representative of the “Hawke’s Bay Tribune” for three years, left this.morning for Wellington, where he joins the reporting staff of the “Evening Post.” The diamond wedding of Mr. and Mrs Alexander Catana ch was celebrated on Thursday last_at Waverley. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs Catanach took place on September 14th, 1862. at All Saints Church, Elton, Lancs. Mr. H. P. West, stationmaster at Napier has been promoted to chief clerk in the Traffic Manager’s office at Dunedin, and will leave to take up his new duties at an early date. During the twelve months he has been in Napier he has won many friends. It is not yet known who succeeds him. After a residence in Hastings of fifteen years, and having close association with the “Tribune” since its inception, first in the commercial department, and, since his return from the war, on the literary staff, occupying the position of news and cable editor, Mr. W. A. Whitlock left for Christchurch this morning to take up his new duties as cable sub-editor of the “Sun.” Dean McKenna, of Newton, is seriously ill, and his condition is causing his friends much anxiety. The dean was to hav© left on Tuesday on transfer to New Plymouth, his successor at Newtown being the Rev. Father Cashman. who recently returned from a holiday trip to Ireland. Last Wednesday night, however, Dean McKenna was taken ill, and his condition has been serious ever since. The funeral of Mrs. Kate Johnstone took place this afternoon when a large gathering, including the members of the Eureka Lodge of Druids, followed in the funeral procession to the Hastings cemetery. Six Druids acted as pallbearers and Rev. Keith Ewan conducted the graveside service prior to to thd body being committed to its resting place. Many beautiful wreaths were laid on the mound. Touring Australia in the interests of “The Times,’’ and other Northcliffe papers. Sir W. Beach Thomas, the noted war correspondent, is at present in Australia (says the “Melbourne Argus”). Ho is investigating the agricultural and pastoral resources of the Commonwealth from the immigration point of view. Sir Beach Thomas has visited Canada, and has travelled widely in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Riverina. Be will spend about ten davs in South Australia .after which he will go on to Western Australia and Tasmania. His stay in Australia and the Dominions lias been curtailed by the death of Lord Northcliffe.
