COST OF DEFENCE.

TOTAL EXPENDITURE OF NEW ZEALAND. A cablegram from Geneva states that the League of Nations has issued a document showing increases in army, navy, and air force expenditure as between 1913 and 1922. The New Zealand increase is stated in this document to have been 148 per cent. Just how these figures have been compiled cannot be ascertained, but they are plainly inaccurate. The total defence expenditure of New Zealand for the year 1913-14 was £765,324. A further sum of £(50,000. part of the annual contribution of £lOO,OOO to the British Admiralty, was paid after the close of the financial year, but might fairly have been included in the total expenditure for the year. The estimates for the current financial year, now before the House of Represntatives, show that the expenditure proposed on the land forces and aviation is £317,616. and on naval defence £256,656. These items make a total of £574,272, to which has to be added interest and sinking fund, amounting to about £115,000 in connection with the loan for the construction of the battle-cruiser New Zealand.
