ENORMOUS INCREASE IN CRIME.
Anyone who has studied the American newspapers for the past few months must be forcibly struck with the enormous increase in crime shown in all parts of “The States.” Hero we give a few random extracts from various journals:— “During the period between January 31st, 1921, and January 31st, 1922. every institution in California suffered a large increase in inmates. The population of insane asylums and prisons suffered one of the most inajked increases in the history of the State.”— “San Francisco Chronicle.’’ “For the first time the State peni- J tentiary at Joliet is overcrowded. Prison officials are planning to relieve the congested conditions by transferring the convicts at the rate of twenty a day to the new prison at Stuteville.”— “Chicago Herald and Examiner.” “Because of the rapidity with which New York courts are convicting criminals, the capacity of Sing Sing Prison has been overtaxed.”—“New York World.” “The State of Illinois has decided to build a new kind of prison.”—“Christchurch Press.” Yet many narrow minded, near-sight-ed individuals want to convince us that Prohibition closes the gaols.
