The death is reported of Mr. George 5 Frederick Smith, a pioneer of the Wai- ‘ kato district. Deceased, who was 83 : years of age, was thrown from a buggy . a week ago, fractured his leg, and died ‘ from shock. A returned soldier. Mr. Joseph Jewett, died at the Masterton Hospi- ’ tai, after a severe illness. Deceased, . who was 49 years of age, was born in j Jersey. He had resided for a consider- t able time in Mas ter ton. At the Napier Police Court this morning before Mr. Dyer, S.M., F. H. Oliver, lor passing a stationary tram . car on the wrong side, was fined £1 and costs 12s. Several other enlarges ' were adjourned fur a fortnight. It is stated that Mr F. P. Brady has « not yet definitely announced his candidature for the Rangitikei scat in the 4 interests of the Labour Party, and it i has not been decided whether he will ■ contest the scat or not.
