NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. DUNCAN WINS AMATEUR. Palmerston N., Sept. 16. Excellent weather prevailed for the finals of th 6 amateur and professional golf championships, in the morning round a large crowd attended the Duncan and Horton match, which was characterised by the steadiness of the former rather than brilliance. Duncan took 77 for the round. Both drove well to the first, Horton finding the green with a lovely second and holed in 3. The second hole was halved in 4 and the next was halved in 5. Duncan holed the next in 4, making all square, and Horton, overrunning his approach and shot putt, gave him tho next also. Holing the next in 4, Duncan was then 2 up. Horton recovered well from a drive off the fairway, but missed a medium putt, leaving Duncan 3 up. The eighth was halved in 4 and Horton took the next. Duncan found a bunker with his second to the 10th and Horton’s 4th shot left him in a handy position and he took the hole, reducing him to 1 down. Duncan holed the next in 5 and increased his lead to 3 at the 12th. Horton, missing a 3ft. putt after Duncan had struck a bunker with his drive, enabled the latter to halve at the next. Duncan was 4 up. The next three fell to Duncan. Horton also failed with a wild drive on the home stretch, making Duncan 8 up. In the afternoon the 19th and 20th went to Duncan Horton took the next two, winning the 22nd with a sft. putt. The 23rd went to Duncan in a 4. Duncan was now’ 9 up. At the 24th both drove well and after exciting free play the hole was halved. It was now evident that Horton must recover greatly to win. The score was now 9 up and 12 to play. At the 25th both lay nicely over the drive and the hole was halved in 4. The 26th was also halved and the score was 9 up and 10 to play. Duncan’s approach beat Hortom The latter had one slender chanco, a difficult putt, but the ball hovered on the lip and came to rest. Thus Duncan was champion for the ninth time, 10 up and 9 to play. HAM WINS PROFESSIONAL. In the professional match in the morning Ham went round in 80 and Shaw 4 in 84, Ham playing good golf excepting green shots and lofties. Shaw’s long game was remarkably fine, but his iron shots let him down. Ham led 3 up at the conclusion of the first round. The afternoon saw’ better golf and a fight of champions. Shaw, undoubtedly the longest driver at the championships,i drove on to the first green. Playing at the 6th his length was 442 yards with a slight wind against him. Ham» sunk a fine putt, but a freak ball saved the hole, which was halved. Ham won 2up and 1 to play. Shaw’s afternoon round was 76 and Ham’s 78. LADIES v. GENTLEMEN. Much interest was taken in the final match of the golf championships played over the week-end between ten ladies and ten of the best at the tournament. A foursome w’as played in the morning and the singles in the afternoon, when Mrs. Guv Williams, lady champion, beat Duncan, 4 and 3, over 18 holes. The lady played superior golf right round the course and beat Duncan over most of the holes without her handicap. She went out in 37 and completed in 80, bogey.
