N.S.W. TOURING TEAM. DEFEATS AUCKLAND. Auckland, Sept. 16. The New South Wales League team opened their tour with a match against Auckland at the Domain before an attendance of 25,000. The weather was perfect and the ground was fast. Auckland kicked off against the sun with a light breeze. Within five minutes Dufty kicked a penalty. Wales transferred play to the Auckland 25, where a penalty enabled Dufty to clear. Auckland quickly transferred, but Delgrosso missing the ball Gray snapped up and by a fine run down the line scored. Horder Jailing with the kick. From a scrum Burge broke away and added to the New South Wales score, Horder failing to convert. Auckland’s score was added to by Dufty, who kicked a penalty. Burge broke away but Delgrosso tackled him. Auckland gradually worked back until Robinson (Wales) broke away and passed to Burge, Littlewood intercepting the latter’s pass and scoring in the corner. Dufty missed with the kick. Wetherill broke away, but was collared under the goal, Avery snapping up and scoring. Dufty converted. Auckland renewed the attack, but Gray broke away to the centre and Horder and Burge carried the ball to well into the 25 and Latta scored in the corner. Horder missed with the kick. Auckland again attacked and off-side play by Burge under the gogT enabled Dufty to kick an easy goal. Johnson. Toohey and Burge next got in a run, the latter scoring under the posts and Horder converted. Burge got another chance from an opening by Toohey and scored in the corner. Horder failed to convert. Tye (Wales) here retired hurt, O’Connor replacing him. Delgrosso also retired. Brown going on. At halftime the scores were:— New South Wales 17 Auckland 14 On resuming Dufty, Laing. Brown and Littlewood immediately had a passing rush, Brown scoring. Dufty missed with the kick. Wales at once attacked with a scrum near the line, in which a penalty relieved the pressure. From halfway Burge broke away and passed to Gray to Latta, who scored, and Horder converted. Brown, Somers and Avery got away and again Brown put in a stirring run, resulting in Brown scoring in the corner. Dufty failed to convert. Then Caples, Robinson, Vest and Horder retaliated, but Horder was tackled near the line. Incidents came rapidly, the Aucklanders having the better of a succession of rushes and counter rushes. From the loose in the Wales’ 25, Wetherill paaped to Avery, who scored under the posts and Wetherill converted. Then from the loose the ball went over the Auckland line. Dufty fumbled and Burge whipped in and scored. Horder missed with the kick. Almost immediately afterwards Brown missed the ball right under the Wales’ goal and Ives scored. Burge converted. A few minutes later Johnson, Caples and Burge handled the ball, the latter scoring and converting. The next score arose from Caples obtaining from a scrum on the halfway and transferring to Toobey, who scored after a dodgy run, Burge converting. Play was now fast, the ball being thrown about in great style. Wales had the better of matters. An Auckland forward rush that promised well was stemmed by Robinson near the line. Then Gray, Caples and Vest put in a run, Laing and Brown stopping. The Wales’ backs made a succession of rushes without success. Play was in Wales’ 25 when time was called.
