THE ANZAC GUN

AT WALTON ON THAMES. London, Sept. 15. Considerable indignation is felt at Walton-on-Thames at a suggestion by Councillor Huckings that the Anzac gun, presented by the New Zealand Government in recognition of the fact that 27,000 Anzacs passed through the Walton Hospital, should bo dumped in the Thames. Councillor Griffith said the suggestion was an insult to the Anzac army and the Anzac dead who lay in the local cemetery. Cr. Huckings replied that he had no intention to insult the Anzacs, but most people thought the gun should be dumped into the Thames It is stated that Cr. Huckings is a local gardener and objects on general principles to the display of guns as emblems of militarism. He has no objection to the Australians’ guns at present outside the old offices. The council is now removing to more palatial premises in a spacious ground, to which the council decided the gun should lie shifted. Cr. H ticklings contends that scrubs would look better than guns—(A. lowould look better than guns.—(United Service.)
