Mr and Mrs A. E. Joll, of Havelock North, left Hastings this morning for Auckland, where Mr Joll will remain some time for the benefit of his health. Mr Taranaki To Ua the Reform candidate for the Eastern Maori seat, left Hastings this morning on a tour of the electorate. He intends going as far as Rotorua. It is with regret the death of Miss Marion Nelson, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs W. T. Nelson, Fitzroy Toad, Napier, is announced. Deceased who was in her 23rd year was for some time sole teacher at Waikare. She was esteemed by a large circle of friends. A very old resident of Auckland, Mr George Crouch, died on Thursday, aged S 8 years. Latterly deceased has been farming at Otnun, nenr Waiuku. Having fought in the Crimean war, ho came to Npav Zealand in the early sixties, then taking part in the Maori war in the Waikato. A bricklayer by trade, he was for many years foreman for Mr J. .1. Holland, whose death was announced only a week or so back. At the meeting of the United Cricket Club in Napier last evening, Mr E. H. Williams, president of the club, was presented with an enlarged photograph of the club’s senior eleven which won the championship last year. The presentation was made by Mr J. Hindmarsh, who referred to the great interest taken and support given the game by Mr Williams. The club thought they could not allow another year to pass by without giving soiqe token of their appreciation. Mrs Clarice Goldsmith, of Hastings, daughter of Mr A. G. Hullett, of Station street, was brilliantly successful in the contralto section at the recent Wellington competitions. For the championship she was only J 5 marks below successful soprano vocalist.. Writing to Mrs Goldsmith, the judge, Mr A. W. Juncker, said that the lady is the possessor of a truly glorious contralto, and he was certain that as a vocalist, she will meet with every success. On the judge’s award-sheet in the song “Home Little Maori,’’ he remarks: “Real contralto quality. The first I have heard.” In the song, “Annie Laurie,” his remark is contralto quality 'at last. Tn all his awards he remarks on the glorious quality Mrs Goldsmith’s voice. The many Hawke ’r Bay friends of Mr A. R. Hine, of the Gisborne staff of Messrs Williams and Kettle, will regret to hear of the death there of his wife, Mrs Frances Emma Hine, which took place very suddenly on Thursday night last. Mrs Hine had been in town in the morning, and appeared/ to be in her usual state of health. In the afternoon she was visiting her daughter, Mrs H. B. Drummond, and as she was not feeling well she laid down for a rest. Rhe was then taken with a fainting fit, but later recovered. About 9 o’clock in the evening she had a relapse, and despite medical aid died at 10.20 p.m. The deceased lady, who was 56 years of age, was a daughter of the late Mr F. D. Rich, of Patetere and Hamilton, Waikato, and formerly of Bushy Park, Canterbury’.
