German Reparations
POINCARE GIVEN FREE HAND. BY COUNCIL OF FRENCH MINISTERS. SEEKING PEACE IN NEAR EAST. [By Cable-Press Association.—Copyrignt.] (Received 15, 10.50 a.m.) Paris, Sept. 14. The Council of Ministers gave M. Poincare a free hand with reparations, approving of his secret instructions to M. Dubois. It is understood these include a demand that the Reparations Commission should proclaim Germany’s voluntary default. The council also agreed to support immediate peace in the Near East. — (A. and N.Z.) NEGOTIATIONS WITH BELGIUM. REVIVAL OF HOPE IN FRANCE. (Received 15, 11.35 a.m.) Paris, Sept. 11. Germany did not expect Belgium to press for the bonds (as cabled last night) and will probably declare that she cannot deposit the gold. The Government is advancing the argument that the Reichsbank cannot surrender gold. On the other hand the instalment of 28,400,000 marks is due on September 15th. As compensation possibly Germany will cover this payment in order to prove her goodwill. In view of the renewed negotiations with Belgium, certain circles say Germany will pav fully. M. SOUTHERN EUROPEAN GUARANTEES. (Received 15. 11.35 a.m.) Vienna, Sept. 14. Austria is endeavouring to raise a loan in the United States, which, it is stated, Switzerland, Italy and the Little Entente are prepared to guarantee. The Morgenthau and Kalin financial groups have already agreed to undertake the placing of the loan. Austria will accept the proposal subject to the approval of the League.—(A. and NZ)
