TARADALE TOWN BOARD.

MONTHLY MFjETING. The above meeting was held last night. Present: Messrs J. Ellis (chairman), C. H. Williams, A. B. Davis, H. Howard and O. Anderson. L. M. Goodger wrote applying for the Hall for picture entertainment on Thursday evenings.—Held over. Mrs B. Al. Watson, who is at present showing pictures twice a week, wrote that she understood her application of February last was the sole rights, but apparently that was misunderstood, and that she had been granted permission for twelve months under the old agreement. She had gone to considerable expense on behalf of patrons and improved the board’s property also. If the board wore satisfied that no contract existed in regard to the sole rights, she would respectfully suggest that the terms be revised and she be given the sole rights, and she offered an additional £3O to the rent, making the rent £l4O per annum. —Held over. State Advances Office wrote forwarding an initial payment of £lBOO in regard to the loan »f £4500 for workers’ homes. State Advances Office also wrote stating that no further authority was required as regarded the £9OOO loan for road widening, public conveniences, etc. In regard to the board’s request for authority to raise the interest on a sum of £2200, that was receiving consideration.—Received. The District Health Officer wrote requesting the board to serve notices upon several ratepayers to effect various sanitary improvements, to be complied with within fourteen days.—The various offenders have been notified. A circular letter was received from Mr Chitha Mackenzie, concerning proposed legislation re institution for the blind.—Held over for the next board’s consideration. Mr S. M. Vowles wrote applying for a permit to erect a culvert.—Granted. Clerk of the Hospital end Charitable Aid Boar£ wrote asking for a prompt, and full payment of the board’s hospital levy, amounting to £364 12s sd.— It was decided to adhere to the usual procedure of paying half. Clerk Hawke’s Bay County Council wrote asking the board to appoint a delegate for the deputation to interview the Minister of Public Works on Tues day, September 26th, at Wellington reWai karemoana power scheme. A motion was passed requesting the Napier City Council delegates to represent the board on the deputation. W. E. Moir and others wrote re a water supply for the Harpham Estate, and suggesting that the beard take over the well, the ratepayers being agreeable to pay the charge to cover the cost of the sinking fund, etc.—Petitioners to be aske.l to supply the board with par ticulars of cost. The ranger reported having impounded 31 head of stock during the past month. Adopted. The report of the sanitation officer was adopted. The Health Officer reported that the sanitary service was highly efficient, Heaving no room whatever for complaints. The clerk and overater reported extensive metalling had been carried out during the past month, costing £lO3 15s 9d. Several yards of limestone and sand are required for repair to footpaths. Mr D. Watson was prepared to pay half cost of repair to the board ’s depot fence, suggested moving the water trough near the Post Office up near the park on Puketapu road, a longstanding eye sore would be thus removed. The antecedent loan of £1074 had been completed and the money was now available. Th credit balance at the hank was £212 12s 7d.—Adopted. GENERAL. The roll number of the Taradale Town Board eligible to vote at the approaching board elections was 693, an increase of 36 upon the previous election. The tender of W. Brown was approved for the erection of a dwelling under the Advances to Workers Dwellings Act. The tender of Healey and Stewart was approved for the erection of a dwelling under the Advances to Workers Dwelling Act. Accounts totalling £260 10s Id were passed for payment. “NOT UNDERSTOOD.” In connection with the approaching election at Taradale, a pamphlet has’ been in circulation in connection with the candidature of an aspirant to local body honours. After referring to the revenue earned Ijv’ the Town Hall the writer of the pamphlet states: “It is possible to make it earn double.” The statement quoted was brought under the notice of the board at last evening’s meeting, when Mr C. H. Williams rewriter of the article had only hired the Hall once, and later the same gentleman waited on the board for a reduction of the Hall fees. He (Mr Williams) was just wondering as to how the Hall revenue could possibly be doubled under such circumstances.
