Unhappy Ireland
BLOOD SPILLINC CONTINUES, REBELS CAPTURE KENMARE. DE VALERA SEEKS PEACE ON OWN TERMS. [By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.] London, Sept. 13. A detachment of armed rebels attacked Kenmore and captured the town after a prolonged and fierce battle, killing many Free Staters and taking 100 prisoners, whom they later marched into the mountains and set free. A force of Free Staters is now marching at the double to recapture the town. Brigadier O’Connell and his brother, while asleep in bed at the latter’s house, were shot dead and another officer wounded. A story is being circulated in Dublin that Mr. Mulcahy met de Valera to discuss the possibility of peace. Mr. Mulcahy reiterated the demand for unconditional surrender. It is believed in well-informed Irish quarters that de Valera is anxious for peace, but demands terms which the Free State refuses to grant. All officers of the Ulster Government have been ordered forthwith to make a formal declaration of allegiance to the service of tiie King and the l ister Government. Hereafter no one w ill be appointed without a similar declaration. Two more battalions of British troops have been withdrawn from Lister and others are to follow. (A. and N.Z.) GREAT FAITH. IN GOVERNMENT’S RIGHT DOING. London, Sept. 13. During the debate in the Dail Eireann Mr. Cosgrave, justifying the actions of the Government, concluded: “If 1 were to meet the Supreme Judge five minutes hence 1 would go hoping that evety action of my life was as His will justified.”—(A. and N.Z.) RESTORING CIVIL GOVERNMENT. London, Sept. 14. Ii was announced at a meeting of the Dail Eireann by the Minister of Honfe Affairs that it was proposed shortly to send a civic guard to follow up the army in certain areas of Southern Ireland where conditions were sufficiently restored for the extension and consolidation of civil government.—(A. and N.Z.)
