Replying to an influential deputation from city and Wairarapa bodies urging the necessity of proceeding immediately with the deviation of the Riinutaka railway line, the Prime Minister said that a great deal of work had already been done on Regarding the Tauhcrenikau deviation, the total cost of constructing that route was estimated a £1,000,000. He did not know what the other routes cost. He agreed that the Government was committed to the deviation, but it could not do the impossible. It was quite possible that it would make an early start on the work next year.
