NAPIER SHIPPING.
BIG INCREASES. Figures presented to the Harbour Board to-day show a considerable increase in shipping and earnings. The following figures being those for 1920, 1921, and 1922 respectively for the first eight months of the year, will show the inc reuses :— Registered tonnage using the port (not including lighterage trips and removals): 302,861; 342,841 ; and 354.665. Cargo.—lmports: General cargo (tons), 48,810; 38,170; and 41,574. Coal ;nd coke (tons), 14,825; 21,545; and 18,601. Coal, Government (tons), 5,170; 15,992; and 4,359. Exports: General cargo (tons), 23,461; 23.834; and 23,447. Wool, flax, hemp and tow (bales), 36,210; 49,548*, and 135.127; beef (tons), 1.153; 1,825; and 1,164. Mutton (carcases), 317,051; 400,921; and 407,488. Mutton (pieces), 6,113; 13,031 ; and 45,660. Lamb (carcases), 193,726; 308,469: and 488,614. Wharfage earnings at Napier during August totalled £4,359, an increase of £702 over the earnings for the same month in 1921. From January to August inclusive the earnings were £38,172. an increase of £5,006 for the eight months. These are the highest figures yet reached for this period. Based on the 1914 charges and not allowing for the subsequent increases the present earnings show an increase of £461 for August and £2,953 for the eight months.
