MISCELLANEOUS CABLES.
A fire at Middle Harbour, Sydney, destroyed a boardinghouse and boat shed with 40 valuable boats. The damage amounts to £lO,OOO. In the Arbitration Court in Melbourne Mr. Justice Powers fixed 2s 9d per hour as the minimum rate of pay for all waterside workers, except men sorting timber, who will receive 3s. Working hours were not altered and the men’s claims for extra pay for special cargoes and preference to unionists were refused. The union applied for 3s Gd and the employers offered 2s 7d per hour. Teheran reports that the prohibition of the importation of foreign liquor, •w’hich has been in operation for the last two years, has been removed by the Government. On the application of the Southern Colliery Proprietors’ Association the High Court in Sydney made absolute the rule nisi restraining the Coal Tribunal from proceeding to deal with the claims of the employees in the (Southern district before hearing an application by the Southern Proprietors’ Association for a reduction in wages. The court expressed no opinion whether the claims of the southern employees might be proceeded w’ith on the original reference of the dispute to the court in January, 1921.
